Unfortunately, all of these suggestions to use something else won't change the Cell into an out of order processor for him. Even more memory would only help a little. PS3's just really aren't made to do this kind of thing.

Yeah, KDE and Gnome used too much memory, in my opinion even you have N Gb, it is not worth to use them,
because of why pay so much memory and cpu for nothing.

use openbox, docker, dillo, mutt, and ncurses instant messenger, mpd for the playing music, reduce number of tty's, use urxvt instead of gnome-terminal, reduce the depth of the display to 16, ... everything helps! I had old powerbook g4 with 256mb... everything was tricky. I'm lucky because I was able to upgrade it with 512mb more...

I'm thinking on getting a newer MacBook Pro: the base model with the 200GB 7200RPM hard disk and maybe 4GB of RAM from a 3rd party vendor. (I'd like to have a Mac Pro now, but I can't get rid of the laptop for quite some time.)
