The CELL is an amazing technical achievement, but installing the tools is a nightmare.

Why was some extra effort not put into the the installation process?

I am beginning to think that the assumption is that "programming the CELL is really hard, so if you cannot deal with a difficult install you are just not going to be smart enough to program the chip"

The Firestorm GPU has finally been released (about 2 years late), is 3 times the cost of a PS3, but may be more successful simply because it seems to be supported by a more "rational" set of tools.

Has "user-friendly" become a bad term? I simply want to program the CELL, not struggle with software installation.

Initially I attempted to install under Fedora, but Fedora 'dies' if I try to enable my second monitor. A few people tried to help, but to no avail. So, I switched to Ubuntu - supports my dual monitor system with no problems.

Cannot get ALL of the CELL tools installed under Ubuntu (only some of them), so switched back to Fedora --- now on Fedora-10. I can get the main SDK package installed, but the "extras" package is proving more difficult.

Hey, bit late but I've got a fairly detailed guide...

Hey, bit late but I've got a fairly detailed guide to how to install these packages perfectly on Debian/Ubuntu on my blog at:
http://mikearthur.co.uk/?p=167

Hope this is of some use!

Thanks for the post.
