Well, as I stated in the first post; [...] "the concept of microkernels" [...].
To quote the Plan 9 (operating system) article on wikipedia.org: "Plan 9's designers were interested in similar goals as the microkernel world, but made rather different architecture and design choices to achieve them."

Wow! I didn't know Plan 9 was designed as a microkernel. I once tried it but I didn't spend enough time to learn about its internals (in fact, I didn't even learn how to use it ;-). I will test it again when I have some free time.

While speaking of operating systems and the concept of microkernels, Plan 9 from Bell Labs has been one of the most interesting projects out there for quite a while -- in my humble opinion.

NetBSD is still my choice of operating system though, but Plan 9 might exceed it soon.
