I love the machine so far and think that the money was well spent, even though I haven't had a chance to install Linux yet. Sincerely, I tried but failed: Fedora 8 (Test 3) doesn't seem to be supported by the installer, but I'll keep trying.
My setup:
But this screws everything up:
Eww, ugly, isn't it? ;-) What's the point of a machine able to output Full HD when I only have this crappy monitor? Specially when the signal of the PS3 is going through an old Avermedia TV Phone card plugged into an old computer that is later connected to this flat panel though an analog VGA connection. Lots of image quality loss! (The Linux console looks even uglier. No joy in using it as a desktop system with this setup, as I wanted to do.)
By the way, the monitor is showing the Folding@Home client bundled in the PS3 system.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI dont know if you have seen this, but to get the HD up and running there are some commands thats have to be launched... This tutorial is for fedora7 but should work for fedora 8 as well...

The problem I was having turned out to be a bug in Fedora's installer. See bug 32511. I've also found other problems when doing a network install: bug 343901. Hope the fixes make it to Fedora 8.
ReplyDeleteLinux? And why not running NetBSD instead?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: The Cell SDK is a Linux thing, as is all the support for the Cell processor. (But I'm willing to try NetBSD...)
ReplyDeletefedora 8 on ps3 install fails!
ReplyDeleteit says (among other things I was too lazy to transcribe):
File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/rhpxl/videocard.py", line 149, in __init__
elif os.uname()[4].count("ppc") > 0 and card.pcidom > 0:
AttributeError: device instance has no attribute 'pcidom'
then it gives you the "it's safe to reboot message."
oh well I'll have to use Fedora 7
I haven't tried Fedora 8 final yet, but I was able to install the RC3 (NO Test 3) correctly. Had to use text mode, though, by booting the installation with 'linux text'.
ReplyDeleteI tried using Fedora 8 Final on a PS3 which already had Fedora 7 on it. So it boots into Linux fine.
ReplyDeleteSo plop the DVD in, boots.. Goes into Text Install automatically.
Runs Anaconda and begins searching for devices.. All LOOKS OK.. then..
I get the same error videocard.py and forced reboot..
Do I need update the otheros?
Is there a different command at kboot? My options were Linux, Linux32, linux64
I'm very intertested in getting this working as Version 7 is incredibly slow.. almost not functional - Which begs the question - did I miss something which is causing the cell processors to be fully functional?
Ideas and thoughts would be well recieved!!
for fedora 8 at kboot prompt type:
ReplyDeletelinux64 xdriver=fbdev video=720p
I got the otheros.bld from the
CELL-Linux-CL_20071023-ADDON.iso cd
What's your opinon of running Ubuntu 7.10 versus Fedora 8? are there any enhancements which would make Fedora a better OS for my PS3?
ReplyDeleteI found that anaconda crash when trying Fedora 8 final too. Thanks to the anonymous reader who mentioned the xdriver=fbdev trick! I will now try if rawhide still has the problem and report it if not.
ReplyDeletematt: As regards running Ubuntu, I don't know. It is as bloated as Fedora in my opinion. I tried Debian here and it feels much faster than Fedora (mostly because of yum!). But I would not recommend anyone to run a full desktop environment in the PS3. It has too few memory to run GNOME decently :-(
So I have loaded both Fedora 8 and ubuntu on PS3. So far I have found that Ubuntu 7.10 performs significantly FASTER than Fedora - usable infact. While I am currently running Fedora 8 werewolf.. I am considering reloading ubuntu as I am not real happy with Fedora's performance. Does anyone know of any config or kernel change or repo I should be using to get more out of Fedora?
ReplyDeleteHi - Which download of Fedora 8 do I need for the PS3?
ReplyDeleteIs it i386, X86 64 or ppc???
Thanks, Steve.
