NetBSD and SoC 2007

Yes, ladies and gentlemen: Google Summer of Code 2007 is here and NetBSD is going to become a mentoring organization again (unless Google rejected the application, that is)!

We are preparing a list of projects suitable for SoC; spend some time looking for one that interests you (I'm sure there is something) and get ready to send your proposal between the 14th and 24th of this same month. I've already made my choice :-)

See the official announcement for more details.

Hi,

I am missing one feature on NetBSD - ability to make it easy (automatic) for users on desktop to mount usb flash sticks and cds. I am talking about nonexperienced users here - e.g. my parents :). Mounting volumes 'by hand' is inappropriate here.
Do you have any information about the state of the HAL port project (http://www.netbsd.org/contrib/projects.html#hal)? The annotation mentions that ``NetBSD does not provide any hot-plugging interface at the moment'', so maybe implementation of such interface could be suggested as a project for SoC 2007 too.

Regards,
r.

rudolf: We are working on a proposal about porting HAL and adding the necessary kernel support to make it work. I hope to publish it this weekend.
