I noticed the "Burn" button when exploring the folder containing the ISOs and I thought that it could allow me to press them to pristine CDs... but it turns out I was wrong. If you have ever used this feature under Windows XP, you know that it only lets you to create new data CDs and burn them, but not burn prerecorded ISO images. It remains the same in Vista.
As I was lazy to look for the CD containing the recording utility that came with my DVD unit — and, sincerely, I do not like it that much —, I looked for and tried several free tools that were supposed to allow me do this. Guess what? None of them worked: they could simply refuse to install or fail to detect my drive.
Fortunately, this search let me discover the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools, a set of utilities to ease administration of Windows boxes. These are free and work on several Windows versions, including Vista. Among all the included goodies, there is one that solved my problem: cdburn.exe. OK, fine, it is command-line based but it does the job it is supposed to do.
Just as an example, this could burn some_image.iso:
cdburn -sao -speed max d: some_image.isoMore on the beta experience on a future post ;-)
Did you try DeepBurner? I've had pretty good luck with it when I'm stuck at a machine without cdrecord. :)
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn't know this utility. But as it is not free, it does not meet my requirements. If I have to pay for it (or some other non-free tool), I'd rather install the program that came with the recorder because I already have the license for it.
ReplyDeleteThere is a free version of DeepBurner for private use... I've used it a few times.
ReplyDeleteAnother good ISO burning utility is ISO RECORDER, http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecord er.htm. It integrates right into the Windows shell, and can be nifty at times.
But of course if you have a license for another piece of software, why not use it ;)

Oh, I see. I did not notice that the 30-day usage limit was restricted to the Pro version. I may try it then.
ReplyDeleteAbout ISO Recorder... that was the first one I tried. But unfortunately it refused to install under Windows Vista :-(
I think http://www.cdburnerxp.se is a good and free alternative for Nero (which came with my burner).
ReplyDeleteSite's a bit slow, but hey, it's free ;)
Try this

Thanks for the help, I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate and downloaded Small Business Accounting from MSDN and was having the same issue as you with the CD burning, good find.
ReplyDeleteI've just installed Vista RTM (Enterprise ed.) and I'm now wondering how to burn ISO images.
ReplyDeleteI usually rely on CDBurnerXP for my ISO recording needs. Great (and free) software. It doesn't work on Vista, though.
ISO Recorder has a new version for Windows Vista (v3 - still beta). Will try it.
I'll also have a look at DeepBurner and IMGBurn, see if they run OK under Vista.
I tried DeepBurner Free edition to burn an ISO under Windows Vista RC2, and it worked well.
ReplyDeleteHad the same problems and tried DeepBurner Free. Love the app! Thanks guys...appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate this blog post about Burning ISO images from Windows. Great article!
